Easy Skin Care New Year’s Resolutions you can follow

New year, new you! How often do you say that and actually follow through on your New year skin care resolutions? 

The beginning of the year is a great time to update your skin care routine—or to start one if you aren’t taking care of your skin properly already! It’s when you have the most energy and motivation to stick to a new routine enough to build a habit. Today we’ll look into little changes you can make in your skin care routine this New Year that will help transform your skin and make it clearer, healthier and more even.

Wear SPF every day

This is one of the easiest things you can do if you want younger-looking skin. If you’ve been neglecting this final step in your skin care routine, now’s the time to start wearing sunscreen. It helps protect your skin from damage caused by UV rays, which are notorious for making your skin uneven and aging your skin faster. Make sure to wear at least SPF 30 whenever you’re going outside, even for a few minutes—and if you’re out longer, don’t forget to reapply regularly. 

Follow the 60-second rule

One of the easiest ways to transform your skin is to practice proper cleansing rituals and what better way to start than to correct your washing habits? We’ve written about the 60-second rule before: it basically says you have to wash your face for at least 60 seconds. This gives the product enough time to penetrate your skin more deeply and more time for its active ingredients to fully take effect.

Start double-cleansing

Since we’re already on the topic of proper cleansing, one of the best skin care routine changes you can make is to double cleanse. What this means is using a dedicated makeup remover to remove your makeup and all the dirt that accumulated on top of it throughout the day, then using a facial cleanser to wash away remaining dirt and residue, dead skin cells and excess sebum. This ensures your skin is thoroughly cleansed and ready to accept other treatments—and you’ll save a lot on facial wash.

Stop touching your face

Do you find yourself touching your face randomly throughout the day? This could be causing your skin to break out. Your hands touch multiple surfaces throughout the day and are therefore carriers of bacteria and dirt that can trigger acne. You can stop the breakouts by being more aware of when you touch your face and refraining from doing so until you’ve washed your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Switch to gentle formulas

If you haven’t been checking what’s in your skin care products, now’s the time to add that to your list of skin care resolutions for this coming year. Treat your skin more gently with formulas that will not dry out your skin or that will be too harsh. Look for the ingredients that help soothe your skin, such as aloe vera and tea tree oil, or that help fight acne and facilitate the skin renewal process without being too abrasive on your skin, such as AHA and BHA. And remember: if you’re using a new product, do a skin test first!
