The 60-second rule took social media by storm, but is it worth the hype? We look into what it is and whether it actually makes your skin better.

The 60-second rule has taken the skin care world by storm because it’s said to be transforming people’s skin. But what is it, and does it really work? That’s what we’ll be talking about today.

What is the 60-second rule?

The 60-second rule is a skin care “rule” that’s specifically for cleansing your face. It’s as the name implies: you need to wash your face with your fingers for 60 seconds before rinsing off the cleanser.

The rationale behind that is if you do it any less than 60 seconds, you aren’t giving the special ingredients in your cleanser enough time to work on your skin. If you cleanse your face in less than 60 seconds as well, you’re not working the product into your skin enough for it to remove the dead skin cells, open up your pores and remove the gunk blocking your pores.

The 60-second rule became viral because of Reddit and because of a viral tweet from an aesthetician who talked about how most people only wash their faces for 15 seconds max. By washing your face for 60 seconds, you allow those special ingredients in your cleanser to take effect and actually work its benefits on your skin. This goes against what some beauty enthusiasts say about the special ingredients not mattering that much because you will wash them off at once anyway.

Does it really work?

The logic behind the 60-second rule is sound, because it really does take time to break down makeup, dead skin cells, sebum and other things that may be blocking your pores. Dermatologists even recommend breaking down this 60-second rule to increments of 15 seconds each for each quadrant of your face to make sure you thoroughly remove any contaminants and work the cleanser into your skin.

Another logic behind that is the fact that skin has a natural protective barrier that you have to get through before products can penetrate your skin effectively. If you wash your face too fast, you won’t get past the protective barrier and get the product into your skin deep enough for it to work. If you’re one of those people who wash your face for just 10 seconds, imagine all that wasted product over the years!

Finally, by cleansing your face for a full minute, you’re massaging your skin, improving your blood circulation. This gets blood flowing to areas, delivering oxygen and nutrients that help make your skin healthier. It also gives you that inner glow and that natural blush that makes you look fresh even without makeup.
