Winter has come and gone, the snow has melted, the sun is out and you’re putting on less layers of clothing—and with this shift in weather, you need to shift your skin care routine as well. We’re here to guide you and tell you how you can transition from your winter skin care routine to practices that are more suited for springtime. Let’s get started!

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

Cold weather leaves your skin dry, dull and flaky, so as soon as you notice the climate getting warmer, be ready to scrub all those dead skin cells off! Remember the most important rule of skin care: Your skin won’t absorb products properly and maximize their benefits if you don’t prep it first. Exfoliation strips away the unhealthy layer of your skin to reveal new, youthful skin underneath—skin that’s ready to receive treatment.

When picking exfoliants, remember that exfoliants with rougher textures such as brown sugar and apricot pits, are perfect for getting rid of dead, dull skin on your body, but not as friendly to the skin on your face. An exfoliant with a gentle formulation such as the SMACNE Exfoliating Aloe Cleanser would be more appropriate to avoid the development of microtears due to rough particles.

Swap to a lighter moisturizer

The colder winter months tend to dry out skin, so you needed to use products that sealed moisture in effectively—and these came in thicker, richer formulations. You won’t need it as much as the weather becomes warmer; in fact, using thicker formulations may clog your pores and be bad for your skin. Instead, switch out to a lighter formulation to keep your skin moisturized as you transition from winter to spring. Look for moisturizers with a hyaluronic acid base or are water-based—these are generally lighter formulations that won’t clog your pores. Steer clear of thick creams and oils.

Use a separate sunscreen product

If you could get away with an SPF-infused moisturizer in the winter, this time you don’t have any excuse to use sunscreen. Spring is the perfect season to go outside and get some sunlight—but make sure you’re adequately protected. As with the moisturizer, switch to lighter formulas so it doesn’t clog your pores. Make sure it’s at least SPF 50 and you’re using broad-spectrum protection. And finally, don’t forget to reapply regularly, especially if you’re spending the day outdoors.

Add eye cream to your regimen

They say prevention is better than cure, and in the case of the skin around your eyes, this is a hundred percent true. As the days get brighter and warmer, your tendency to squint increases, and this could lead to wrinkles and skin damage. Avoid this by adding eye cream with a high concentration of antioxidants to help fight the signs of skin aging.

Use products high in antioxidants or peptides

Since we’ve already mentioned antioxidants to protect the skin around your eyes, why not add it to your daily spring skin care routine? Antioxidants such as vitamin C will protect your skin from premature aging, as well as leave your skin feeling soft and supple. Just remember to put sunscreen on top of everything though—if you’re outdoors and wearing products that are high in antioxidants, you’re more exposed to the damaging UV rays of the sun.

Treat your skin!

Your skin has been through a lot in the winter, and spring is the perfect time to give it a treat because you’re transitioning from extremely cold weather to warmer days.
